Look At What We Are Learning:

Language Arts:
  • Spelling next week will concentrate on the short /u/ sound.
  • During Writer's Workshop we will continue to work on Capital letters to start a sentence, punctuation at the end, and transition words to help tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end.  We are beginning to finish up our unit on Narrative Writing.
  • During Reader's Workshop we will continue to build good reading habits by taking a sneak peak, checking our sneak peak, reading more and more, and scooping up words when reading.  We have also been concentrating on making inferences  (using what you do know to make a guess about what you don't know) when we read a book.

Social Studies:

We will continue to talk about our government leaders (mayor, governor, and president).  We will also continue our conversations about how rules and laws are similar/different.

Math:

We will continue to  work on representing a number in various ways.  For example, standard form, expanded form, word form, base ten form, etc.

Science:
We are learning all sorts of ways to describe the properties of solids and ways we can sort objects by these properties.  We will move from solids to liquids later in the week.

Discussions At Home:

Don't forget to study your spelling words each week.  Spelling tests will be given on Fridays.  If your child spells all 10 words correctly on the pretest on Monday, they will be given a new set of words (List B) to study.  The spelling rule will be the same, but it will have more challenging words on it.  Always study the list that is attached to the pretest on Mondays.

Practice counting to 120 from any given number with your child.  Parents pick a number and take turns saying the next number until you reach 120.

Have your child tell you all the ways to represent a number!  They are amazing at representing a number.  Go first grade!
