Look At What We Will Be Learning Next Week:

Language Arts:
  • Spelling: /ea/ makes the long /e/ sound.  "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking".
  • Writer's Workshop:  We will continue our study of expository writing.
  • Reader's Workshop:  We will continue to work on our comprehension and fluency when reading. We will also be talking about "Author's Purpose" -- to inform, entertain, and persuade
Social Studies:
We will continue our unit on history and discovering how events from the past affect our present and future.  We will talk about the connections between the past and present.  Our Mind Missions reflect our unit of study. This week we designed a stretcher to help Clara Barton carry injured soldiers.  Next week we will make a ladle to help Eleanor Roosevelt serve soup in her soup kitchen.  We will also finish our exploration into MLK's life.

Math:

We will review all the ways to decompose a number up to 120.  Learners will practice counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 120.  We will begin introducing coins and identifying their value.

Please see the link below to exercise while counting to 120 by 5s.

Science:

We will discuss how the weather changes from season to season.

Discussions At Home:

What events in our past affect how we live now?
Clara Barton helped start the American Red Cross.  How does this organization still help people today?

Discuss the importance of skip counting.  We use skip counting for basic tasks such as telling the time or dealing with money.  Activities such as sports, shopping or even counting large quantities are made easier by acquiring the ability to skip count. Practice skip counting at home with your child.  Give your child pennies and have them skip count the value.  It is so much fun and it will benefit your child.

Watch a weather forecast with your child or look at one together in the newspaper or on the internet. Ask your child to identify and explain the weather symbols and describe what the weather will be like.

In Other News:

Mark your Calendars!!!!  First grade is going on a field trip on April 2nd to Kidzania in Frisco.  More information will follow but we wanted to let you know in case you would like to accompany us and need to take a day off of work. We can't wait!!

Next week we will have High Touch/High Tech come to visit first grade!  We are excited to have some hands on science with this amazing company!!  Thank you PTO!!!!

Coats, coats, and more coats...........Please make sure to write your name on the tag of your child's coat. Let's try to keep those coats out of Lost and Found!  Also remember, if the temperature is above freezing, we will go outside.  Don't forget to send your child with a coat each day.
