Look At What We Will Be Learning Next Week:

Language Arts:
  • Spelling:  When we return from our Thanksgiving break, we will continue to learn the 3 different spelling rules for adding "ed" at the end of a root word.  Our spelling test for this rule will be Friday, December 6th.
  1. **If the root word ends in "e" -- add a "d" to the word
  2. **If the root word ends in vowel/consonant - - double the consonant and add "ed"
  3. **If the root word ends in consonant/consonant - - add "ed"
  •  In Reader's Workshop we will concentrating on reading with a smooth voice when reading with a partner.  Many of us have also moved into a new reading level which means we will have more challenging books to read during Reader's Workshop. Way to go first grade!!
  • During Writer's Workshop, we will concentrate on our good reading habits in our leveled books (scooping up words, taking a sneak peak, setting goals, reading with a smooth voice, and doing something at the end of the book).
Social Studies:
We will continue to talk about different cultures, traditions, and celebrations that we have.  All customs/traditions projects will be due the week we return from Thanksgiving. The information on the project came home Thursday, November 21st.  Be sure to check the green folder.  If you have any questions, please e-mail your child's social studies teacher.

Math:

Learners will collect, sort, and organize date in three categories using models/representations such as tally marks and T-charts.

We will continue to work on how to solve action word problems (addition or subtraction with unknowns in any position)

For example, There were some dogs.  4 dogs left.  Now there are 3 dogs.  How many dogs were there to start? Learners will

  • show what you know:  ___ - 4 = 7
  • Solve with a tool - number line or ten frame
  • Check - Does your answer make sense?  Joining ( + ) Result must be greatest number Separating ( - ) Start must be greatest number.
  • Find your answer

Science:

We will close our unit over rocks and soil and begin to discuss the natural sources of water.

Discussions At Home:

What are some traditions that you have in your family?

What celebrations does your family celebrate throughout the year?

If the weather is nice, take a walk or visit a park, playground, or yard.  Bring a bucket and shovel, and dig a hole.  Look into the hole to see if your child can identify layers.  Talk about how the top layer of dirt is different from the cool, clammy dirt below, and note if the soil turns to solid rock at some point.

Please continue to skip count by 5s and 10s to 120.

In Other News:

As the temperatures begin to turn cooler, please remember that if the "feels like" temperature is 33 degrees or above we will be going outside for a little recess.  Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for those chilly recess days.  Thank you!

We love this time of year and being thankful for our blessings.  Thank you so much for sharing your precious children with us!  We are so thankful for each and every one of them!
